The internet outage in Azerbaijan has not affected the flow of traffic to other countries, Iltimas Mammadov, the acting minister of communications and high technologies, informed Trend on November 17.

Azerbaijan nearly lost all internet connectivity at approximately 4:15 p.m. local time due to technical issues. The problem occurred since a fire broke out in the lines connected to the DATA-center of Delta Telecom, according to the ministry.

No problems were reported in the flow of internet traffic through the territory of Azerbaijan, Mammadov remarked.

“Internet outage occurred due to equipment damage at the technical center of Azerbaijan’s primary service provider,” he explained.

“However, transmission channels to Georgia, Iran, and the Middle East were working at full capacity,” noted Mammadov.

Internet outage for several hours affected the functioning of some organizations in Azerbaijan.

The backup system at the DATA-center failed to become operational after the fire occurred as there was a problem in the power supply, according to Azerbaijan’s primary provider, the Delta Telecom Company.

The outage affected the operations of a mobile service provider in the country. Among three mobile operators in the country, only Azercell had no internet connectivity as it is connected to Delta Telecom, while two other operators Azerfon (NAR) and Bakcell are connected to AzerTelecom.

The outage also affected the country’s e-payment systems.

According to the banks, the lack of internet connectivity disrupted the functioning of money transfer systems, with the exception of the international interbank data system for payments, SWIFT.

The Heydar Aliyev International Airport did not experience internet connectivity problems as it has its own link, Azerbaijan Airlines reported.

Problems were not observed at the E-auction as its operations concluded before the internet outage occurred. The E-mortgage portal was also not affected by the outage.
