Vugar Hashimov Memorial to be held among children

The Vugar Gashimov Memorial international chess tournament among children will be held in Baku on July 24.

The Memorial, which will honor the late Azerbaijani grandmaster Vugar Gashimov, will bring together over 130 chess players, winners of European and World Championships, as well as country`s champions, with ranking points over 1,600 from Belarus, Georgia, Iran, Azerbaijan and other countries.

The tournament will feature boys and girls competitions in 8-10-12-year old age groups, Azertac reported.

The winner will gain the Vugar Gashimov Cup, as well as qualify for “Baku-Open 2016” international tournament.

The 9-round tournament will be completed on August 1.

Renowned rapid and blitz player, Vugar Gashimov, was one of several highly talented young grandmasters from Azerbaijan who have risen to prominence in world chess in recent years.

After his great successes, Gashimov had to put his activities on hold for a while for a surgery. His disease re-surfaced in 2011, causing him to suddenly lose consciousness during a match against the French national team in the European Championship. Then a long-term treatment in Switzerland and Germany began, but he failed to beat the disease.

The country is already hosting the Vugar Gashimov Memorial, also known as Shamkir Chess, among adults.
