Para-athletes secure 11 qualifications for Rio 2016

The National Paralympics Committee of Azerbaijan announced about great success of national para-athletes, who were able to secure licenses for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

Azerbaijan secured 11 qualifications for the Rio Games following the Doha 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships in Qatar.

Para- athletes, who won licenses to the Summer Olympic Games in Rio, are male judokas Ilham Zakiyev weighing at +100kg, Ramil Gasimov at 73kg, Bayram Mustafayev at 60kg, female judoka Sabina Abdullayeva at 57kg, swimmers Dmitriy and Roman Saley, and athletes Kamil Aliyev, Elchin Muradov, Irada Aliyeva and Elshan Huseynov and Elena Chebanu.

Elena Chebanu was the last athlete to win the license following her performance in the 100 metres sprint for women in Doha. Elena could not catch Omara Durand of Cuba and placed second.

Earlier the national paralympic long jumper, Kamil Aliyev, won gold medal with a 7.13m jump.

In the Women's Javelin F13, Azerbaijani athlete Irada Aliyeva broke the world record with a score of 44.18 m.

In the Men's Long Jump T11 the national athlete Elchin Muradov won silver medal.

The Azerbaijan Paralympics Committee includes hundreds of athletes, many of whom have achieved many successes since 1996 as a result of sound policies. In the same year for the first time, the country was represented in Atlanta Summer Paralympics Games with two athletes, representing two sports.
