Azerbaijani football club Karabakh was defeated by Austrian Salzburg in UEFA Championship on August 6.

The second leg game ended with 2-0 in favor of the Austrian team with both goals by Martin Hinteregger. By this victory, the Austrian team went to the next round of the championship.

Commenting on the match, Head coach of Karabakh Gurban Gurbanov said: "The game went not as we had planned. Forced substitution has played a negative role on our play. We had very bad injuries all of a sudden."

The team played well on the whole, he added. "Our opponent was strong. It will now play in the League of Europe. Let us see what we will get in the coming days."

Gurbanov also congratulated Salzburg for the victory saying they have a good chance to get into the Champions League.

Salzburg's Head Coach Adolf Hutter said Karabakh was a very powerful contender. "We were carefully prepared for the second leg. The result showed that we were completely prepared. We almost did not give a chance to the opponent."

Karabakh won 2-1 Salzburg in the first game of the two-legged encounter in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League held in Baku on July 30.

Karabakh was the first Azerbaijani team that passed the round after a home win in the first game.

Earlier, Karabakh defeated Maltese Valetta in both games.

Karabakh Aghdam club, formed in 1951, is one of the two teams in Azerbaijan, along with Neftchi Baku that has participated in all Azerbaijan Premier League championships to date.

The club is immensely well supported around Azerbaijan mainly because it is the only team representing the war-torn Nagorno-Karabakh region in the league.
