Baku hosts Open Summer Swimming Championships

Baku-based Hovsan Olympic Sports Complex hosted Azerbaijan's Open Summer Swimming Championships on June 20-22, country's Swimming Federation said.

The three-day event brought together over 50 swimmers from Azerbaijan, Russia and Ukraine. The federation said Ukrainian athlete Anton Zheltukov won the gold medal in the breaststroke at a distance from 50-100 and 200 meters, while in medley swimming at a distance of 200m Zheltukov took the second place.

A member of the "Neftchi" sports club, Boris Kirilov took first place in the freestyle category at a distance of 50-100 meters, as well as backstroke and individual medley swimming. Another two representatives of the club - Roman Saley and Dmitry Saley won the gold medal in freestyle and butterfly categories.

The representative of the "Sarhadchi" sports society, Fatima Alkerimova ranked first among girls in the freestyle and breaststroke categories, while Julia Tsistyuk from the "Tehsil" sports society ranked first in backstroke, butterfly and individual medley categories.

At the last day of the championships, organized by the Swimming Federation, winners were awarded with medals and diplomas.

Earlier, Azerbaijan's Shirvan Olympic Complex hosted an international open swimming tournament dedicated to the memory of National Leader Heydar Aliyev. Held on May 9-14, the sports event brought together about 70 athletes from Russia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.
