Azerbaijani athletes to join WTF Taekwondo Grand Prix
Azerbaijan is fortunate to have five of its fighters qualify for
the inaugural WTF World Grand Prix to be hosted in Manchester,
England, from December 13 to 15, AzerTag state news agency
reported.
This competition will bring together 32 top-ranked fighters in each
of the Olympic weight categories for taekwondo.
The newly-initiated WTF Grand Prix Series is the major way for
athletes to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics via an international
point-ranking system. The top six fighters in each of the Olympic
weight categories will automatically qualify for the 2016 Rio
Olympics based on points accumulated through 2015 international
competitions.
The five Azerbaijani taekwondo fighters who have booked a spot in
the 2013 WTF Grand Prix Finals are: Mikayil Aliyev weighing in at
58 kg, Ramin Azizov at 80 kg, Radik Isayev at over 87 kg, Gunay
Agakishiyeva at 57 kg and Farida Azizova at 67 kg.
