Turkish police raids football clubs in match-fixing scandal

ANKARA – Turkish police carried out raids in 15 cities across the country due to the alleged match-fixing scandal, Xinhua reported.

Aziz Yildirim, chairman of Turkish league champion Fenerbahce football club, was detained Sunday morning as part of an investigation into potential match fixing. Several other Fenerbahce officials were also detained in the raid.

Around 40 people in total were detained during the police operations in various parts of the country.

The operations are in regard to alleged match-fixing during games last season when Fenerbahce was crowned Turkish champion and thus earned entry into the lucrative UEFA Champions League group stages.
