Germany's Vogts keen on Azerbaijan's success
German coach Berti Vogts has pledged to turn the Azerbaijan football team into a headache for the world's elite teams.
"We will try to make things difficult for the world's top teams and to score points from them," the 61-year-old former Germany coach told the presentation ceremony in Baku on Monday.
Vogts said he would try to hold training for the team at least once a month.
He called on local football clubs to cooperate. "They too should contribute to the development of Azerbaijani football."
Vogts said he planned to invite an assistant coach, a doctor and tactics coaches from Germany.
"I have talked to some coaches. I can't cite any names at this point but will announce in May who will work with us. I am also looking to hire an Azerbaijani assistant coach," he said.
Vogts said he would also work to bring new players to the national team.
He declined to disclose the amount of the two-year contract recently signed with Azerbaijan. But the president of the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) Rovnag Abdullayev said it was not too costly.
"It is very normal and satisfactory," Abdullayev added.
Vogts takes over from Macedonian Gjoko Hadzievski, who was sacked at the end of last year after Azerbaijan finished bottom of their Euro 2008 qualifying group.
Vogts quit as Nigeria coach last month following the team's exit from the African Nations Cup.
Under his leadership, Germany cruised to victory at the European Cup in 1996.
In the past, the position of Azerbaijan coach was also held by former Brazilian player Carlos Alberto Torres.
