Kazakh president says Eurasian Economic Union is purely economic project

Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev considers the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) as a purely economic project, the president’s press service said.

Nazarbayev made the remarks during the meeting with the public and political figures of the U.S. at the headquarters of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace global think tank in Washington, DC.

The EEU is an economic union with uniform rules for movement of goods, services, capital and workforce, according to Nazarbayev.

“I would like to emphasize that it is not about reestablishing the USSR,” he said. “It is necessary to eliminate these stereotypes of the Cold War.”

Kazakhstan’s president said the Eurasian region is a key geopolitical and geo-economic factor in the world politics and the interests of all global players – China, Russia, the US, the European Union, India, Iran and Turkey – intersect there.

The Eurasian Economic Union was created on the basis of the Customs Union and the Common Economic Space and started operation in early 2015. Its member states are Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia.
