Armenia overwhelmed by persecution campaign

12 December 2008 00:55 (UTC+04:00)
Armenia is overwhelmed by a wave of persecution, the country`s human rights commissioner, Armen Arutyunian, has said. He noted that in order to retain power and oppress the opposition, the incumbent authorities were using the "1937 Stalinist methods".
Arutyunian said the parliament is mainly made up of pro-government forces, while the government is interested in the opposition only to create a vision in the eyes of the West. "There is no real opposition."
The Ombudsman described as a show the investigations into cases of violence launched after the presidential election. He said the government was using direct and indirect pressure to hush up the real political situation in the country. Arutyunian added that more than half of the country`s population was opposed to the government, noting that the authorities were in a state of "cold war" with the people.
The human rights commissioner was appointed by former president Robert Kocharian, but the relations between the two have turned sour.
