Refining oil for further exports 'not viable'
"If the finished product refined at local enterprises is put on
sale abroad, no one will buy it, as its quality is not in line with
international standards," Aliyev told reporters.
"Azeri gasoline is never sold in foreign markets. Instead, crude they purchase from us is refined abroad and further used as a domestic product," the minister said.
He said funds to the tune of $1 billion were required to build refineries meeting world standards at home.
"The key goal now is to ramp up oil production," he said but did not rule out that building refineries jointly with other countries, and Turkey in particular, could prove efficient in the future.
