India, Kyrgyzstan discuss military cooperation
By Vusala Abbasova
India transferred a mobile military hospital to Kyrgyzstan in accordance with bilateral discussions held between the sides in Bishkek on 12 July.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his official visit, presented a certificate on equipment for the martial mobile hospital to his Kyrgyz counterpart, Temir Sariev.
The hospital's equipment includes an apparatus on measuring pressure as well as cooling systems, 20 beds for patients, 20 operating tables, filters and other equipment totaling $264,000.
All materials and equipment are produced in Russia and purchased at the expense of the Indian government.
"Currently, the potential of Kyrgyz-Indian cooperation doesn’t correspond to the facilities of the two countries," Sariev noted.
The volume of the trade between the two countries amounted to $38 million, added Sariev. In his opinion, this figure is not the limit for both countries.
"We can and we have to increase the volume of mutual trade to $200 million per year," the Kyrgyz Prime Minister stressed.
India and Kyrgyzstan have inked four agreements on defense cooperation during Modi's visit to Bishkek as part of his eight-day, six-nation tour to Central Asia.
The Indian Prime Minister emphasized the need to combat terrorism and extremism, which have become major problems to contemporary life.
“We both seek a peaceful and secure neighborhood at a time of challenges in our region. And, we have shared interest in combating extremism and terrorism that has become a threat without borders,” he said following his talks with Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev.
Modi further underlined that the new agreement on defense cooperation would provide a framework to broaden engagement and would include the exchange of defense technology.
He also discussed the recently-concluded joint Khajar 2015 exercise as an important part of strengthening bilateral defense ties.
“We have decided to hold joint military exercises on an annual basis,” he offered.
Sariev also highlighted the importance of bilateral cooperation in the fields of computer technology, agriculture, textiles, and tourism.
