Kazakhstan to hold senate election in fall

Kazakhstan's Senate election will be held on October 1.

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a decree on July 31 calling on relevant bodies to get prepared to hold Senate election in autumn.

"The election of Senate (Upper House of Parliament) will be held on October 1, 2014 in accordance with subparagraph 2, Article 44 of the Constitution, Article 69 of the Constitutional Law dated September 28, 1995 'On elections in Kazakhstan'" the decree said. "The decree comes into force from the date of its publication."

According to electoral laws in Kazakhstan, the nomination of candidates for upper house of Parliament will begin on August 2 and will last till one month before the election day.

There are 47 deputies in Kazakh Senate, 15 of them are appointed directly by the president, and the rest 32 (local representatives) are elected by people through vote. Senators are elected for a six-year term. Every three years, some 16 senators are re-elected. The last election of Kazakh Senate was held in 2011.
