Iran to increase anti-warship missiles range

Iran plans to boost the range of its anti-warship and anti-radar missiles in the near future.

Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, Commander of the Aerospace Division of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), said the range of those missiles will increase from 50 kilometers to 100 kilometers soon, Press TV reported.

Referring to Iran's numerous achievements in its defense and military industries, Hajizadeh said, "Iran has managed to overcome the enemies' sanctions by relying on domestic forces and drawing on their capabilities and talents."

In an exhibition held on May 11, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps unveiled two new types of home-made ballistic missiles dubbed Hormuz 1 and Hormuz 2.

Hajizadeh said Hormuz 1 is an anti-radar ballistic missile which can destroy radar sites on warships and land.

He went on to say that Hormuz 1 is capable of hitting targets within a range of 300 kilometers with high accuracy.

The missile destroyed a 20-foot container at a distance of 300 kilometers during the test fire, Hajizadeh explained, adding that the newly unveiled second ballistic missile dubbed Hormuz 2 is an anti-ship missile.

The Hormuz missiles are an upgraded version of a domestically-made anti-ship missile, dubbed the "Persian Gulf", which the IRGC had manufactured earlier.

The Persian Gulf is a solid-fuel anti-ship missile that travels at supersonic speeds, and can hit targets within a range of 300 kilometers. Equipped with a 650-kg warhead, it has a margin of error of less than 10 meters.

The newly-unveiled Hormuz 1 and 2 are seemingly more powerful than the Persian Gulf in terms of destructive power, range, and accuracy.

Another obvious modification in the Hormuz missiles is a brand-new launcher which displays developed capabilities in mobility, stationing on difficult terrains, and rapid firing.

Iranian media outlets report that Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems in recent years.

Since 1992, Iran has manufactured its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles, radars, boats, submarines, and fighter planes.

Iran also unveiled its first domestic long-range Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in 2010.

Iran has always stated that its military might poses no threat to other countries and its defense doctrine is deterrence-based.
