Tbilisi calls for stopping Moscow’s illegal actions in occupied territories
By Jamila Babayeva
The Georgian Foreign Ministry urged the international community to assess the situation in its occupied territories and take appropriate measures to prevent Russia's illegal actions.
"The Georgian Foreign Ministry expresses its deep outrage regarding the illegal actions of Russian servicemen along the occupation line in the Tskhinvali region," the ministry announced on February 25.
Russia's occupying forces have recently resumed the installation of barbed wires in the Gogeti and Atotsi villages in the Kareli district.
The ministry stressed that the process of installing barbed wires by Russian forces in the direction of the occupied Tskhinvali region was suspended in the past two weeks.
"Unfortunately, despite the calls from the international community, the Russian Federation continues to violate the principles of international law and the ceasefire agreement dated August 12, 2008," the statement says.
"The Georgian government condemns the illegal actions that adversely affect the humanitarian situation of the Georgian population and significantly limit its internationally recognized rights, including the right to freedom of movement and getting education in their own language," it added.
"The critical situation in Georgia's occupied regions highlights the need for appropriate security mechanisms," the statement further says.
Georgia and Russia, its giant northern neighbor, have maintained no diplomatic relations since a brief war in 2008. Tbilisi broke off relations with Moscow in August 2008 when Moscow crushed a Georgian assault to reassert control over two rebel regions -South Ossetia and Abkhazia- and later recognized the regions.
Georgia announced the two unrecognized republics as occupied territories in September 2008.
