A joint FAO and EBRD forum on food safety will take place in Tbilisi on January 23, EBRD reported.

The event will discuss the potential impacts on food value chains and local producers as Georgia begins to harmonize food safety legislation with that of the European Union.

The forum is supported by the Georgian Ministry of Agriculture.

The Forum will aim to establish a platform of constructive dialogue between government and private agrifood producers, paving the way to modernized food value chains and an improved investment climate.

Forum participants will be invited to voice their views on the potential effect of these changes and to interact with policy-makers, representatives of international finance institutions and other agribusiness companies.

To date, the EBRD has invested a total of €1.8 billion for 158 projects in various sectors of the Georgian economy, and has mobilised a further €3 billion for these ventures from other sources of financing. In the Georgian power sector alone, the EBRD has committed over €250 million.

Georgia became a member of FAO in 1995.
