Georgian citizens were not given a chance to vote: official

By Nazrin Gadimova

Tbilisi intends to demand an explanation from Moscow at Geneva talks regarding the prevention of Georgian citizens from voting in the October 27 presidential elections.

As Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Davit Zalkaliani said, this issue will be included in the agenda of the next meeting in Geneva to be held on November 5-6.

"Despite the promises made at the last meeting to prevent tension in the village of Ergneti in the area of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict, they were violated and our citizens were not given the opportunity to vote in the elections because they were not allowed to leave the occupied territories," Zalkaliani said.

He said that this is a violation of the fundamental rights of Georgian citizens and Tbilisi will demand an explanation.

According to the Central Election Commission (CEC) tallies, the presidential election held in Georgia on October 27 ended with an outright victory for Giorgi Margvelashvili, who was nominated by the ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party. Margvelashvili won more than 62.16 percent of the votes.

Georgia and its giant northern neighbor Russia have had no diplomatic relations since a brief war in 2008. Tbilisi broke off relations with Moscow in August 2008 when Moscow crushed a Georgian assault to reassert control over two rebel regions - South Ossetia and Abkhazia - and later recognized the regions.

Georgia announced the two unrecognized republics as occupied territories in September 2008.
