Tbilisi not to join any military operation against Syria
The Georgian Defence Ministry doesn't plan to participate in any military operation, Defence Minister Irakli Alasania told journalists while commenting on the Syria events and a Georgia's possible participation in actions against this country.
"We all are glad that diplomacy was given opportunity to settle this conflict. We all have heard our partner U.S. president's statement which gives diplomacy a chance for activity. Of course we condemn all facts of use of chemical weapons and agree with the international community that all who use chemical weapons should be punished. Georgia namely supports this position of EU and the civilized world. When coming to concrete plans of the Defence Ministry, it doesn't include participation in any military operations," Alasania said.
Georgia backs the U.S in its actions against Syria, but, Georgia supports only peacekeeping efforts of the U.S with regard to Syria, he said.
Until quite recently, the clocks were ticking on a possible intervention in Syria after international pressure against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime mounted due to the alleged chemical attack in Syria; however, a recent Russian proposal and the stance the US has taken signal that the big powers are deciding to push instead for a diplomatic solution to the situation in Syria rather than a military intervention.
