Georgia can join UN peacekeeping operations
By Nazrin Gadimova
Georgia's Defence Ministry reported that the Georgian military can join the peacekeeping operations under the auspices of the UN.
The issue was discussed during the official visit of the Georgian delegation to the United States, as Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania and Chief of the Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces; Colonel Irakli Dzneladze met with Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations Edmond Mulet.
The sides mulled issues of peacekeeping operations and the inclusion of Georgian peacekeepers in them.
the Georgian side will consider the possibility of participating in UN peacekeeping operations in the status of an observer.
Currently, Georgian units do not take a direct part in peacekeeping operations under the auspices of the UN, although in 2005-2007 the Georgian battalion under the command of the United States was included in the UN mission in Iraq and about 550 Georgian soldiers defended the UN headquarters in Baghdad.
The UN peacekeeping is the military contingents of the countries - members of the UN allocated under the Charter of the United Nations in order to prevent or eliminate the threat to peace and security through joint enforcement action (military demonstration, a military blockade, and so on) if the measures of economic and political character are not insufficient.
