Russian court convicts ethnic Armenian for airline fraud
A Moscow city court has sentenced an ethnic Armenian lawmaker to nine years in jail on charges of fraud that stripped Russia`s major private airline Transaero off $1.5 million.
Levon Chakhmakhchian, who was elected to the city legislature from the Russian southern republic of Kalmykia, headed the Russian-Armenian Business Cooperation Association, a non-profit organization. He had been detained in 2006, together with his son-in-law, employee of the Accountancy Chamber, Armen Oganesian, and the entity`s chief accountant Igor Arushanov. The three were caught red-handed at the Transaero office with a suitcase packed with cash worth $300,000.
Investigators ascertained that the money had been extorted from the company`s management as remuneration for the alleged solution of outstanding problems with the transfer of taxes and customs duties to the state budget.
Armen Oganesian and Igor Arushanov were sentenced to eight and seven years in prison accordingly.
