Russia calls for new round of talks between Iran and world powers
By Sara Rajabova
Russia has called for another round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers once Iranian President-elect Hassan Rohani has taken office, Press TV reported.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on June 26 that there have been certain breakthroughs made before the elections, and they would like to reaffirm them.
Lavrov said prior to the June 14 presidential election that Tehran had announced its readiness to discuss the conditions for halting its 20-percent uranium enrichment.
Furthermore, on June 21, Lavrov said the P5+1 group was to make an offer for talks shortly after Iran's president-elect is sworn in early August.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi said that Rohani is responsible for nuclear talks and he should decide the time of the next nuclear negotiations with the P5+1 countries.
He also said that Rohani has set up a group to assess the future rounds of comprehensive negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 group.
However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Araqchi has rejected the reports on Rohani's creating a new nuclear negotiating group, ISNA news agency reported.
Araqchi noted that the media outlets misunderstood what Salehi said.
"Rohani hasn't created any new group for nuclear talks with the P5+1 group countries. However, in due time, he will choose a group to hold talks with the six major powers," Araqchi said.
Earlier, he said that Iran and the P5+1 group may continue talks on the 20-percent uranium enrichment in the future meetings.
Iran and the P5+1 -- Russia, China, France, Britain, and the United States plus Germany -- have held several rounds of talks, mainly over the Iranian nuclear energy program.
The most recent round of high-level talks between Iran and the P5+1 group, which failed to produce a breakthrough, was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan on April 5 and 6.
They had held similar negotiations in the same city on February 26-27.
