Georgia expects to sign association agreement with EU in Vilnius

By Nazrin Gadimova

The main part of an association agreement between Georgia and the EU has been coordinated, Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze said.

The final details of the agreement will be agreed through video conference, she noted.

"I am confident that the EU will complete this process in time and the text will be signed at the Eastern Partnership summit to be held in Vilnius on November 27-28," Panjikidze said.

Earlier, State Minister of Georgia on European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Alexi Petriashvili said the conclusion of an association agreement with the European Union will make the process of Georgia's integration into the EU irreversible.

According to the State Minister, the text of the Association Agreement, including the agreement on a free trade has been virtually agreed, excluding small aspects.

He expressed confidence that the signing of the agreement will take place at the Vilnius summit of Eastern Partnership in this autumn.

"This is an important result of a great work," Petriashvili said. "The main text of the Association Agreement (it is also accompanied by applications) has been agreed upon, but I will not speak on the details before the end of the negotiations. The major negotiators are the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economy, we only coordinate this process."

He noted that 70 percent of the text of the agreement was agreed at the time of the previous government, but there were very important issues that remained in the rest part of the agreement.

An Association Agreement is a treaty between the European Union (EU) and a non-EU country that creates a framework for co-operation between them. Areas frequently covered by such agreements include the development of political, trade, social, cultural and security links.

Georgia launched negotiations about an Association Agreement in July, 2010. It will replace an agreement with the EU from 1996 about partnership and cooperation.
