Iran's Guardian Council may ask presidential hopefuls to unveil their plans
Iran's top constitutional supervisory board said that it may ask
certain presidential hopefuls to discuss their plans with the body,
Tasnim news agency reported.
Guardian Council Spokesman Abbas Ali Kad-Khodaei said that if
necessary, the supervisory board will hold meetings with hopefuls
during the vetting process.
He also said that the Council will release the final list of
approved candidates to the Interior Ministry, which will then
inform the media.
686 individuals signed up for Iran's 11th presidential
election.
The Guardian Council is required to name the approved candidates by
Friday. This period can be extended for five days.
Iran will hold the 11th presidential election on June 14.
The voters will select the successor of the current President
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is not able to participate in the
elections for the third term according to the country's
constitutional laws.
The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national
election and the Guardian Council vets the candidates for
qualifications.
