Three European airlines stop flights to Yerevan

Three European airlines stopped flights to Yerevan last year, vice-chairman of the Armenian Association of Travel Agents Yeghishe Tanashyan has said.

Namely, British Airways, LOT Polish Airlines and Latvian Air Baltic refused to fly to the Armenian capital.

According to Tanashyan, thanks to Air Baltic, the flights to northern Europe were affordable and British Airways served U.S. tourists offering expensive, but comfortable conditions.

Tanashyan said the decision was due to the high prices at the Zvartnots airport, as well as non-free air space.

Prices for flights to Eastern Europe have increased by 20-25 percent compared to previous years.

The Armenian tourism sector had great hopes for the Polish airline because the living standards have increased in Poland, and even during the crisis the country's tourism companies showed an interest in Armenia. Negotiations were held regarding Armenia's participation in the largest Polish exhibition. After the cancellation of flights, however, all these projects were frozen.

British Airways decided to stop its flights to Yerevan from October, the London office of the company told Radio Liberty's Armenian service in August 2012.
