Sargsyan`s letter to Ahmadinejad kept secret
Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandyan handed over a special letter from the country`s president, Serzh Sargsyan, to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during a meeting in Tehran on Sunday, Fars news agency reported. The content of the letter was not elaborated.
During discussions, Ahmadinejad reportedly stressed the importance of establishing a free trade zone between Iran and Armenia.
The two countries signed an agreement on creating a free trade zone in their borderline territories in 2009, but the initiative has not been realized so far.
According to Armenia`s Foreign Ministry, Nalbandyan and Ahmadinejad also discussed a number of joint projects, including those on construction of a hydro-power plant over the Araz river, laying high voltage electricity transmission lines, transporting oil products and constructing a railway line.
Prior to his meeting with the Iranian president, Nalbandyan held talks with the head of Iranian Supreme National Security Council and the country`s foreign minister, the report said.
The Iranian minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, said the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh was among the issues discussed, adding that Tehran was ready to mediate the ongoing talks on resolving the dispute.
Nalbandyan, for his part, said Yerevan supports Iran`s nuclear program, which has peaceful aims.
Talks on Karabakh settlement are currently brokered by US, Russian and French mediators through the OSCE Minsk Group. Iran has brokered peace talks several times in the past, but its proposals have not been thoroughly discussed to date.
