Russia, Iran stand for not putting pressure on Caspian states – Lavrov

MOSCOW – Russia and Iran stand for not putting pressure on the Caspian countries, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after the talks with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi on Wednesday, Itar-tass reported.

"Bilateral partnership yields results in our joint work in the Caspian region. Russia and Iran want the region to be stable and prosperous. We want the countries, which are located in this area, not to put pressure from outside. We want their choice to be respected and we seek to build freely build multifaceted cooperation," Lavrov said.

The Russian minister said he did not doubt that Moscow and Tehran had big prospects for cooperation. "Our interests should not be restricted only by the Caspian region. There are good close relations with many states of the Middle East and North Africa," he said.

"It is rather useful that Russia and Iran exchange views on the events in these regions and try to make their contribution to the peaceful settlement of a series of conflicts and situations that are not calming down, unfortunately," Lavrov stressed.
