Medvedev to nominate top Putin aide as Moscow mayor

MOSCOW – Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said he will nominate Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's chief of staff, Sergei Sobyanin, as the new Moscow mayor.

Medvedev told Sobyanin at a meeting at his country residence of Gorki that he has decided to submit Sobyanin's candidacy to the Moscow city legislature.

He said that one of the top priorities for the new Moscow mayor would be to fight widespread graft.

"One of these [problems facing Moscow], which we should talk about candidly and openly, is corruption. Unfortunately, little has been done [to curb corruption] in recent times," Medvedev said.

"And in some cases we have seen schemes that raise questions, at the very least, about their legality."

Medvedev last month sacked long-serving Mayor Yury Luzhkov, saying that he had lost confidence in him.
