Top Iranian official recognizes Armenian ‘genocide’: report
TEHRAN – Iran’s vice-president has claimed that Ottoman Turkey committed genocide against Armenians in 1915.
"Though the Ottoman Empire does not exist any more, the Armenian government is demanding an official apology from Turkey and payment of a compensation for its actions," Hamid Baqaie, who also heads Iran's Cultural, Handicraft and Tourism Organisation, told a conference, Armenia Today news agency reported.
According to historians, from 1915 to 1923, Armenians had begun an uprising. They had taken up arms against Turkey and assisted Russia, one of Turkey’s enemies in WWI. To counter these actions, the Ottoman Empire decided to resettle the Armenians. However, the latter claim that their predecessors were subjected to genocide in the process, while Ankara rejects the allegations and has offered to research the events through a joint commission of historians.
Baqaie said that genocides remain on the agenda and have not been forgotten. He cited as examples the US bombing of Japan during World War II and the latter’s demanding a compensation from the U.S., and Poland’s levelling compensation claims against Russia over similar developments.
