Security tightened in Yerevan ahead of Medvedev’s visit

YEREVAN – Security has been tightened in Yerevan ahead of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s visit, with men in dark clothes carrying out special security measures in the center of the Armenian capital, eyewitnesses said.

The security officers are seen going up buildings, tracking streets and taking photos. Orders have even been issued to remove refrigerators storing beverages from the streets.

Armenian media reported quoting President Serzh Sarkisian’s press service that Yerevan and Moscow are due to sign a number of agreements on strategic cooperation during President Medvedev’s visit, due on Thursday. Presidents Sarkisian and Medvedev are further expected to join an informal summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the military arm of the former Soviet bloc CIS, to be held August 20-22.
