War may resume any time – Armenia defense chief (UPDATED)
YEREVAN - Azerbaijan’s belligerent rhetoric and threats indicate
that war may resume over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh any time,
Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian has told Russia’s Interfax
news agency, adding that what he called Baku’s military policy
poses a direct threat to his country.
"Azerbaijan has increased its military budget several times. It is
propagating hostility against the Armenian people and state,"
Ohanian claimed. "This policy could cause disruption of stability
and contradicts the agreements reached on a peaceful settlement of
the Nagorno Garabagh conflict."
The Armenian defense chief also claimed that his country’s armed
forces are ready to repel an attack any time.
Armenia has had territorial claims against Azerbaijan, a South
Caucasus neighbor, since the early 1990s. The country’s armed
forces have been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s
internationally-recognized territory, defying international law.
Azerbaijani officials have repeatedly warned against Yerevan’s
policy of aggression, saying the country’s land will be freed at
any cost.*
