Eastern Partnership assembly meeting postponed

19 March 2010 07:26 (UTC+04:00)
The first meeting of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, a legislative body of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership program, initially scheduled for March 23-24 in Brussels, has been postponed indefinitely.
According to Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammadguliyev, the postponement is due to differences about the composition of a ten-people-strong delegation to represent Belarus at the assembly.
"Though the Belarusian side had sought the delegation’s being composed of parliament members, the European Parliament passed a decision to invite representatives of the Belarusian opposition and non-governmental organizations to the meeting."
Mammadguliyev added that the EURONEST meeting may be re-scheduled after the April 25 elections to local government agencies in Belarus.
The Eastern Partnership will give Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan an opportunity to gain free-trade benefits typical of EU member-states if they work toward harmonizing their laws with EU standards and developing civil society and rule-of-law infrastructure. *
