Turkmenistan leader calls to set up opposition party
The formation of opposition parties will be important for the
socio-political life of the country, Turkmen President Gurbanguly
Berdimuhamedov said at a governmental meeting.
Only the Democratic Party headed by Berdimuhamedov has functioned in Turkmenistan thus far.
According to Berdimuhamedov, active participation of new parties in a country's socio-political processes will create competition for the Turkmen Democratic Party.
"Interested can put forward the initiative to establish a new political party and to pass registration in 2010, in accordance with the county's Constitution," Berdimuhamedov added.
"This may be an agrarian political party of political or any other direction," the Turkmen media reported. *
