Armenian PM’s Israel visit postponed over Iran: sources
Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian’s working visit to Israel initially scheduled for Monday has been postponed, with Sarkisian’s health condition being the main reason for the postponement, Armenian media claimed.
Government sources said the prime minister was suffering from fever. Pinhas Avivi, a senior Israeli Foreign Ministry official, has confirmed the reports.
Armenia Today news agency claimed, however, that Iran had hampered the visit. A diplomatic source in Jerusalem told the news agency that the Armenian premier "caught flu" after his meeting with the Iranian President’s adviser Mehdi Mostafavi. Thus, Tehran reportedly bewared that Israel would attempt to agree with Yerevan on confidential cooperation over Iran’s nuclear program.
Though Iran considers itself a key ally for Armenia, the Armenian Patriarchy is maintaining close ties with Tel-Aviv due to the presence of numerous Armenian Christian shrines in Jerusalem, analysts say.
Armenian Catholicos Garegin II was expected to accompany Sarkisian during his visit.*
