Armenia-Turkey passenger transport on upward trend - report
Passenger transport between Armenia and Turkey through other
countries increases 20 percent every year while the two countries’
shared border remains closed, Armenia Today news agency quoted an
Armenian official as saying.
Gagik Yeganyan, who heads the Territorial Administration Ministry’s
migration agency, claims that the trend has been observed since
2000. That year, about 17,500 Armenians visited Turkey, while the
number of Turks visiting Armenia was 14,600. The figures increased
in 2008 to 63,800 and 64,400 respectively.
Yeganyan alleged that passenger transportation will rise further
after the opening of the Armenia-Turkey border.
Armenia and Turkey have been at odds and the border between the two
countries has been closed since 1993 due to Armenia’s policy of
occupation against Azerbaijan and genocide claims. On October 10,
two protocols -- which ultimately seek to open the Turkish-Armenian
border – were signed.*
