Russia is among the main partners of Iran, while Iran is a major trading partner of Russia in the Middle East, a state with significant economic potential and a large market for Russian products.

According to the Federal Customs Service of Russia, published on April 8, the trade turnover between Russia and Iran in January and February 2019 increased by 14.2 percent on an annualized basis to $ 360.7 million.

These data showed that exports from Russia to Iran over the two-month period amounted to $ 262.7 million, an increase of 20.6 percent, while imports to Russia from Iran totalled $ 98 million, an increase of 0.2 percent, according to Iran Daily.

The share of Iran in Russian foreign trade in January-February 2019 increased from 0.3 percent to 0.4 percent compared to the same period of 2018.

The head of the Central Bank of Iran said that Tehran, Moscow and Ankara agreed in September 2018 on a number of economic measures, such as the exclusion of dollar in their mutual transactions as part of efforts to expand their trade relations against the backdrop of pressure from Washington.

According to Abdolreza Hemmati, the agreement was concluded on the sidelines of a key tripartite summit on Syria, held in Tehran with the participation of the presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkey.

Diplomatic contacts between Russia and Iran began in the 16th century. Iran expressed readiness to continue relations with Russia as the successor state to USSR on December 25, 1991.

The Russian-Iranian political dialogue is based on the coincidence or proximity of the two countries' positions on most global and regional issues, in particular, building a multipolar world order, strengthening the UN role in international affairs, countering new challenges and threats, a Syrian and Iraqi settlement, and the situation in Afghanistan.

Russia proceeds from the fact that interaction with Iran is an important condition for ensuring the national interests of the country, strengthening stability in the South Caucasus and Central Asia, as well as in the Middle East.

Russia made a significant contribution to resolving the situation around the Iranian nuclear program.

In the structure of Russia's exports to Iran, the main share of supplies accounted for the food products and agricultural raw materials; metals and articles thereof; machinery, equipment and vehicles; wood and pulp and paper products; chemical industry products.

Russian imports comprise such groups of goods as foodstuffs and agricultural raw materials; metals and articles thereof; chemical industry products; mineral products; machinery, equipment and vehicles.
