Georgians condemn Sarkisian`s claim
Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian`s statement that the Armenian language should be recognized in Georgia`s Samtskhe-Javakhetia region, which is densely populated by Armenians, has sparked a wave of resentment in Georgia, with local media reports labeling the claim as state support for separatism.
Shalva Natelashvili, the leader of Georgian laborites, suggested that Armenian authorities refrain from countering Georgians. ``Let Mr. Sarkisian raise this issue before the administration of Buenos-Aires, which is home to 100,000 Armenians, as well as in California, which is home to 300,000 Armenians. Let the Armenian language be designated as a regional tongue there first. Afterwards, we might consider that, too,`` Natelashvili said ironically.
Shirak Torosyan, an Armenian parliament member and chairman of the Javakh Union, claimed that President Sarkisian had ``essentially expressed the position of the region`s population.`` He went as far as threatening Georgia. ``If Armenians living in the region wanted to, they would have broken away from Georgia back in the 1990s. They should realize in Georgia that the Javakhetians` will is unbendable,`` Torosyan alleged.
