Georgia moves to regain land from Armenia

1 September 2009 22:52 (UTC+04:00)
The Georgian government has begun a campaign against Armenia`s policy of occupation. Tbilisi has passed a resolution to regain control over the territories once illegally taken over by Yerevan, namely, the Shirak border province, which is being presented as part of Armenia.
Georgian frontier guards have moved slightly forward in their positions and raised neighboring Armenia`s concerns.
The most disputed area between the two countries is the Bavra village. Koryun Sumbulyan, the rural community leader, claimed that since Georgian border troops moved closer villagers have been unable to perform agricultural work in an area of at least 3 km from the border.
However, Armenia`s state commission in charge of delineating the shared border sees no grounds for concern. It claimed that the land in question belongs to Armenia, saying that Tbilisi`s territorial claims are doomed to fail.
Georgia says the territory is part of its country, according to an agreement reached in 1947.
Analysts say the two countries are facing this dispute for the first time in the past two decades, warning of bitter ramifications.
Armenia has had territorial claims against Azerbaijan, another South Caucasus neighbor, since the early 1990s. The country`s armed forces have been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan`s internationally-recognized territory, defying international law.
