Azeri tycoon targeted by Russian gov`t
Ethnic Azerbaijani Russian billionaire Telman
Ismailov, who has recently launched Europe`s most expensive hotel
in the Turkish resort city of Antalya, is now targeted by law
enforcement agencies over what local TV reports claim is a
smuggling-related controversy.
The Russian government`s attention is due to allegations that smuggled goods worth $2 billion, found at the Cherkizov market in Moscow, are owned by Ismailov.
Nearly half of the weekly update aired by Russian state-run RTR TV channel on Sunday, as well as a scrutiny made by the Special Reporter program, raised questions concerning the alleged smuggling case and how the businessman had earned over $1 billion to build the luxurious Mardan Palace in Turkey.
On the same day, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin criticized his country`s law enforcement bodies, demanding arrests at the market due to continued smuggling.
"Such instances should not remain without consequences, and the consequence is apprehension. Where are the arrests?" Putin queried.
Yuri Chayka, the Russian Prosecutor-General, told RTR that both the origin and suppliers of the goods discovered at the Cherkizov market are unknown. According to Chayka, children`s clothing found in containers was revealed to contain poisonous substances.
The television program also maintained that the market is patronized by some high-ranking officials.
