Turkmenistan ready to co-op with West on gas exports
Turkmenistan`s President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov
said Thursday his country was ready to hold talks with Western
companies on new export routes to diversify its gas supplies as an
international conference on energy security started in
Ashgabat.
Early this month, Turkmen officials accused Russian giant Gazprom of being responsible for an explosion on a gas pipeline stretching to Russia, which was followed by the halt of gas exports to this country from Turkmenistan. It is of note that Berdymukhamedov`s statement on the Central Asian state`s readiness to cooperate with the West comes after these allegations.
The Turkmen leader said "the price of natural gas should be set by the producer." Further, he said the United Nations was the only and universal organization vested with providing political guarantees, security and reliability in transporting energy resources to world markets. In this sense, the only correct pricing scheme is the one developed in the course of direct talks between the seller and the buyer, Berdymukhamedov said.
"It is the producer who should determine the price, and, in doing so, the cost-value of fuel, in other words, the depth of the field, the period of production, other operational expenses and pricing trends in the world should be taken as a basis."
Berdymukhamedov emphasized that politicizing the issue of energy exports and using this as a tool for accomplishing certain political goals contradicts the requirements of global development and defies logic.
The conference, being held under the UN auspices, is attended by officials from Russia, the United States, the European Union, as well as representatives of some 100 oil and gas companies. Discussions are focusing on ways of exporting hydrocarbons from the resource-rich Caspian basin to energy-thirsty European markets.
Azerbaijan is represented at the event by the president of the state oil company SOCAR Rovnag Abdullayev.*
