Armenia ex-president seeking mayor`s job
Armenia`s ex-president and leader of the country`s
opposition Levon Ter-Petrosian will run for the elections to the
post of Yerevan`s mayor, as a decision in this respect has been
adopted in a meeting of the Armenian National Congress (ANC).
The ANC said in its statement that considering the role of Yerevan in the country`s political and economic life, the elections to be held on May 31 were of great importance.
In addition to Ter-Petrosian, Garik Beglarian from the ruling Republic Party and leader of the Party of Prosperous Armenia Arutyun Kushkian will run for the elections. The Dashnaksutyun and Orinats Yerkir parties are supposed to join the race with a common candidate.
The mayor of Yerevan was earlier appointed by the President, but according to the decision adopted in February 2009, the capital city`s mayor will be elected through the voting.
