Turkey has once again voiced its gratitude to the fraternal Azerbaijan for the latter’s support during the military coup attempt back in July 2015.

Turkey is grateful to Azerbaijan’s president and people for their support during the military coup attempt, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said at the meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on October 12.

Cavusoglu reminded that during the rallies to back the democracy against the military coup attempt in Turkey, Azerbaijan supported the country by holding similar rallies.

The July 15 coup attempt occurred when rogue elements in the Turkish military tried to overthrow the country's democratically elected government.

Turkey's government has repeatedly said the deadly plot, which martyred at least 246 people and injured more than 2,000 others, was organized by followers of U.S.-based preacher Fetullah Gulen.

Gulen is accused of leading a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary, forming what is commonly known as the “parallel state”.

In mid-August, Azerbaijan’s General Prosecutor’s Office filed a criminal case with regard to supporters of Fethullah Gulen.

The case was filed under several articles of the Criminal Code at the Department for Investigation of Grave Crimes of Azerbaijan’s General Prosecutor’s Office in order to prevent illegal activities of supporters of Fethullah Gulen’s terrorist organization in Azerbaijan’s territory.
