Iran launches satellite
Iran has launched its first satellite into space, in a move which could further fuel worries by Western powers over its nuclear ambitions.
The launching of the domestically made Umid satellite comes on the 30th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in the country, the official Iranian news agency reported.
The launch was carried out on orders from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
We recall that some news agencies reported in August 2008 that Iran had launched a satellite. However, the Iranian defense ministry said several hours later that it was not a satellite, but its model. Pentagon officials further said that Tehran`s attempt to launch the model was unsuccessful.
Iran already launched a satellite in 2005, but it is not directly attributed to Iran as it was dispatched with Russia`s help.
