Moscow`s joining NABUCCO `depends on regional stability`
Russia`s participation in the project to build the NABUCCO pipeline
to pump gas from the resource-rich Caspian and Central Asia regions
to Europe depends upon stability in the region, Russian First
Deputy Foreign Minister, Andrei Denisov, has said.
He noted that the project remains only on paper and, at this point, it is difficult to evaluate its future prospects.
With regard to the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) main export pipeline, which pumps Azerbaijan`s crude to Turkey through Georgia, he said the project has been "overly politicized."
Denisov said the reliability of the BTC pipeline was highly dependent upon stability and security throughout the Caucasus, as well.
The NABUCCO project, worth 8 billion euros, seeks to deliver 30 billion cubic meters of gas to European markets through a 3,300-kilometer pipeline traveling through Azerbaijan and Turkey to Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Austria. Transporting the first gas shipment via the pipeline is scheduled for 2013.
Only Azerbaijan, so far, has agreed to transport its gas via NABUCCO. The United States and Europe are also working to secure energy exports from Central Asian states Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan via the route.
