McCain urges to guard security of BTC pipeline
The United States should safeguard the security of the
Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline running through Georgian
territory, U.S. Republican presidential hopeful, Senator John
McCain, has urged.
"If Russia takes control of the pipeline, European energy security may be at risk. Furthermore, Western states would fall under the dependence of Russia," McCain said.
The pipelines running through Georgia have been shut down as a result of Russia`s military aggression.
Touching on the latest developments, the presidential candidate issued a warning to Moscow, saying it should not use energy resources as a weapon. He said Russia`s recent military intervention in Georgia would cause further hikes in oil prices in Western markets.
McCain said the U.S. should respond to Russia as soon as possible to protect the energy security of its own and other Western nations. Moreover, domestic energy resources should be used to ensure energy security at home, he added.
