By Sabina Idayatova
Turkey has extended an agreement with Algeria on liquefied gas imports for another 10 years, the Hurriyet newspaper quoted Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz as saying.
Yildiz on Saturday paid an official visit to Algeria where he met with his counterpart Youcef Yousfi. The Turkish minister discussed a number of economic issues, as well as the extension of the gas agreement between the two countries, which was signed in 1988.
The sides also discussed cooperation in exploration of hydrocarbons and renewable energy sources.
According to Yildiz, Turkey plans to increase imports of liquefied gas from Algeria to 6 billion cubic meters from the current 4 billion cubic meters.
The gas agreement between Algeria and Turkey, which expires in October 2014, was signed in 1988 and entered into force in 1994.
According to the Turkish Energy Market Regulatory Authority, liquefied gas imports to Turkey in September 2012 amounted to 291,995 tons compared to 258,570 tons in the same period of 2011.
Turkey currently imports gas from Azerbaijan, Russia, Iran, Nigeria and Algeria in the total amount of 51 billion cubic meters.
