Turkey in talks with Russia to increase gas supplies

Turkish state-owned pipeline company Botas is in talks with Russian oil giant Gazprom to increase gas supplies to Turkey via the western route, Trend news agency reported referring to Sabah online newspaper.

Botas intends to import additional one billion cubic meters of gas per year. It is reported that the Russian company has agreed to supply gas, but the parties have not reached a final agreement on this issue yet.

Earlier Botas refused to extend expiring 25-year contract with Russia because of price disagreements. In late November, Gazprom has signed a long term agreement to supply gas to private companies of Turkey.

According to Botas, Turkey imported 39.7 billion cubic meters of gas in 2011. Russia ranks first among exporters of gas to Turkey. The country is followed by Iran and Azerbaijan.
