Iran seeking to buy Shahdaniz gas in coming years
Iran is seeking to buy gas to be produced from Azerbaijan's
biggest field Shahdaniz. The country's oil and gas company has
appealed to the Azeri state energy firm SOCAR and the project
shareholders for the purpose, SOCAR Vice-President Elshad Nasirov
said.
He said the proposal forwarded by Iran says the neighboring country
is looking to purchase the entire bulk of gas to be extracted
during Phase 2 of Shahdaniz development to start in 2013.
Azerbaijan will keep only 2-3 billion cubic meters for itself.
Tehran's proposal is currently under discussion.
The SOCAR executive said as much as 13.7 billion cubic meters will
be produced from Shahdaniz after 2013. Sales of gas from the field
will take 15 to 21 years.
Nasirov said discussions were still under way on Russian giant
Gazprom's buying gas from Azerbaijan. He added that feedback on the
issue of foreign companies involved in gas output was pivotal.
Gazprom has made an unexpected proposal to buy Azerbaijani gas for
market prices during a visit by the company head Alexei Miller to
Baku early last week.
The Shahdaniz field launched production in 2006. The field holds
estimated reserves of 1.2 trillion cubic meters of gas.
