Iran says no damage to its oil platforms from new cyber attacks
New cyber attacks on Iran's oil and gas platforms in the Persian Gulf did not yield any results, Mohammad Reza Golshani, the Iranian Offshore Oil Company's head of IT, was quoted by Mehr news agency as saying. He said the attacks were carried out from Israel and several other countries.
Several days ago Iran suffered a cyber attack that disrupted the internet connection across the country, according to the secretary of Iran's High Council of Cyberspace, Mehdi Akhaven Behabadi.
Golshani said cyber attacks targeting National Iranian Oil Company's (NIOC) network, as well as those of Saudi Arabia's Aramco and Qatar's RasGas Co. Limited have intensified in the past several months.
According to him, because Iran has protected itself from the risks posed by the Internet, creating its own local network, the security of vital databases of oil companies was not breached.
In April, Iran was hit by a cyber attack on its main oil export terminal and on the Oil Ministry itself, Iranian industry sources said.
Moreover, a virus was detected inside the control systems of Kharg Island, which handles the vast majority of Iran's crude oil exports, but the terminal remained operational, a source at the NIOC said.
The Islamic Republic has tightened cyber security since its uranium enrichment centrifuges were hit in 2010 by the Stuxnet computer worm, which it believes came from Israel or the United States.
