PM: Bulgaria doing its best to move Nabucco West ahead

Bulgaria is looking forward to the launch of Nabucco West pipeline -- to supply Azerbaijani gas to Europe -- and is doing its best to move the project ahead, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borrisov said in an interview with Euronews.

According to Borrisov, Bulgaria has been doing everything possible to realize the European Union-backed project.

"The [Bulgarian] parliament has approved its construction," he said. "We have signed all the documents required and, if necessary, we can start construction work tomorrow. I am looking forward to the launch of the Nabucco project," Borrisov said.

Nabucco West is a short-cut version of the Nabucco project, which envisages construction of a pipeline from the Turkish-Bulgarian border to Austria. Gas to be produced during the second phase of Azerbaijani Shah Deniz gas field development is considered as the main source for the project. In June the Shah Deniz consortium selected Nabucco West as the single pipeline option for the potential export of Shah Deniz Stage 2 gas to Central Europe, which is expected to start in late 2017 or early 2018.

The project's current shareholders are Bulgarian Energy Holding, Romanian Transgaz, Turkish Botas, Austrian OMV, German RWE and Hungary's FGSZ, and each of them holds 16.67 percent stake.

Besides Nabucco West, the Shah Deniz consortium currently considers another option to deliver gas to Europe -- Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). Earlier this year the Shah Deniz consortium made TAP a priority route for export of Azerbaijani gas to Italy. The TAP project is designed to transport gas from the Caspian region via Greece and Albania and across the Adriatic Sea to southern Italy and further into western Europe.

The final decision on a pipeline route will be made in 2013.
