Caspian gas enough for supplies to Europe, Azeri official says
Caspian gas will be sufficient to fill gas transportation infrastructure to ensure supplies to European markets, Azerbaijani Energy Minister Natig Aliyev told an oil and gas conference in Baku on Tuesday.
"In this case the question is about the gas not only from Azerbaijan, but also from Turkmenistan, which seeks to secure access of its own gas to Europe," Aliyev said.
According to him, Azerbaijan's proven gas reserves exceed 2.5 trillion cubic meters, while those of Turkmenistan amount to 7 trillion cubic meters.
Transportation of gas from Central Asia, in particular from Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, could be realized by constructing the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline from the Turkmen coast of the Caspian Sea to Azerbaijan, where it will be linked to the Southern Gas Corridor. The project will enable Azerbaijan to become a transit country along with a gas exporter.
Work is also underway to build Trans-Anatolian gas pipeline (TANAP) from the eastern border of Turkey to the country's western border, a proposed Azerbaijani-Turkish project under which Azerbaijani gas is to reach Europe's borders, enabling the country to turn into a direct supplier of its gas to energy-thirsty European markets.
